Shilshole Bay Marina 7001 Seaview Ave NW, Seattle, WA 98117. Dock L. The docks are lettered alphabetically from the south to the north, so it's in the north half, past the Admin building. If you are coming past Michael's, it's another mile, past the Admin building, then take the second driveway on the left. If you're coming down Golden Gardens Drive, go around the bend, then turn in. Most of the parking is permit only. Either park on the street, or the first row of parking on the outside. The Marina hasn't towed cars recently, but don't be the one.

Call (206) 817-4148 if the gate is locked, and someone will come up to let you in. Or look down the dock and wave. We will try to have signs up at the gate.

It's a potluck, so bring something for the grill, a side dish, and something to drink. Plates, cups, and eatware, plus BBQ tools will be provided.

SEPTEMBER

burning

General Meeting Tuesday September 14, 2010 - "THE BURN" at Golden Gardens

Time: Starting at 7pm, but if people can get there earlier, it helps to reserve space.

Location: Golden Gardens, past Shilshole Bay Marina

People will have to look for familiar faces, as we don't have signs or balloons.

The Burn is for mistakes and trash. The embarrassing stuff that should no longer exist. (Though some trading has happened)

Also, wood scraps from the shop can be cleared out, but NO plywood.

It's another potluck type event. If people can bring firewood suitable for cooking, some cooking can be done there.

The park doesn't really allow alcohol, but if we keep it discreet...

We can bring the plates and cups leftover from last month, but help from others by bringing their own would be nice.

Potluck items should have their own serve tools. Flashlights might help during clean up.

OCTOBER

General Meeting Tuesday October 12, 2010 - Guitar Photography by Stephen Sheriff

Time: Starting at 7pm

Location: Michael Gurian's Instrument Barge

Address: 5350 30th Ave NW Suite H.

Grill available, bring dishes, snacks, sweets, drinks and utensils!

Steve's plan for this presentation is to offer some basic methods and tips for making impressive, well lit, interesting photographs of guitars, using inexpensive digital cameras and lighting equipment. He will also talk about the ways he has found to use photography as a sales promotion tool for luthiers, in particular, producing internet-ready images with a minimum of fuss and expense. Steve would also like to invite open discussion amongst the group, to share ideas on using digital photography to make our work more visible in the marketplace.

Steve says, " I've found that you can do high-quality photography with very simple setups and basic equipment, if you are inventive and resourceful. I won't be getting into any techy-stuff, and I won't even mention Photoshop. I will bring my digital camera and low-cost strobe lighting with me, and demonstrate some lighting basics, using the "less is more" approach to making interesting, creative images of our lutherie work. I'll provide a source list for useful materials, and some guidelines for the most useful equipment specifications. With an absolute minimum of knowledge of digital technology, I was able to build my own website on my home computer, using entirely self-generated photography and text, at almost zero cost. My shop partner, Aaron Andrews, has gone this route as well, and we've both gotten rave reviews on our sites."

See what they've done with a bare minimum of financial outlay and material resources:

Photographic Experience:Steve Sheriff earned a BFA degree in Fine Art Photography in 1983 at Towson University (Baltimore), and made his living as a commercial photographer for the next fifteen years. This was well before the advent of digital photography; He strictly old-school in that respect. But he has found that the same concepts of lighting, composition, and taking a creative approach to image-making still applies with digital equipment, and it's easier and cheaper than ever to produce high quality images.
