Regular March Meeting

Tuesday, April 8, 7:00 pm

At Rick & Cat's shop, 118 North 35th Street, suite 105
(That's in Fremont, between First and Phinney, one block south of Leary/36th and one skinny block north of the canal)

Subjects: SLC organization, bending wood
Presenters: Brent McElroy, Rick Davis.

We'll start the meeting with a FINAL discussion and decision-making about the organization of the SLC -- purpose, structure, agenda, dues. A report of the sense of the meeting will be emailed to the list for approval but this is YOUR chance to participate in making SLC whatever you'd like it to become! Be there! It is proposed that we charge dues of about $40/year to cover expenses of mailings, speakers and materials for meetings, and other activities. Non-dues- paying members will be welcome as guests at ONE meeting per year with a fee charged for subsequent visits (if they don't join). Among the activities and expenses might be an improved and enlarged website which can be helpful as a sales tool for members, and an instrument exhibit and sale. We need to decide if we are ready to go ahead with this expansion of SLC's goals, and to take action if we are.

Then, following the heated debate, Rick and Brent will demonstrate several ways to bend sides, binding, and purfling. Brent will have his Fox/Doolan bender; Rick will have his crude homemade bender. Several hand bending hot pipes will be set up as well. Everyone will have the opportunity to bend, fracture, distress, scorch, and generally abuse some nice woods, both by hand and with the assistance of fancy equipment. Bring samples of wood if you'd like to practice on your own stuff. The meeting will end when the shop is full of smoke but all fires are put out.

Future meetings:
May 13 -- A picnic or potluck, perhaps with entertainment, maybe a guitar toss and/or burning
June 10 -- Dan Erlewine will demonstrate and discuss new repair techniques (to be confirmed but it looks likely)
