Seattle Luthiers at Folklife 2003

Seattle Luthiers 2003 Folklife Booth This was the year of the resonator. The colorful ones with the hubcaps (blue, '54 Packard Clipper; red, '52 Mercury) are Larry Pogreba's. That's a dolphin-free "loaner" at the lower right replacing Dave Krause's.

The Seattle Luthiers' showing at Folklife 2003, their fifth year at the festival, was a small but elegant affair. With but four builders, the group occupied one booth space instead of two, and concentrated on getting out information about the big show in October -- the Second Annual Puget Sound Stringed Instrument Exhibit.

Joining veterans David Haxton and David Krause this year were Larry Pogreba, Willow Creek, Montana's claim to lutherie fame, builder of a wide variety of eye-catching guitars; and Scott McKee, long-time member and infrequent oud maker.

There were also cameo appearances by Michael Tagawa, Robert Lane, Rob Girdis, Gary Wagner, Ray Moores, Brent McElroy, James Campbell-Drury, Jay Hargreaves, Cat Fox, Rion Dudley, and -- and -- Rocky Perko's father!

Over the three days there were sales of a number of T-shirts as well as an instrument or two, and the occasional chance to get away and hear some music. Those in attendance are counting it a success.
